This class is four months long: January - April. There will be two classes each month, highlighting 2-3 quilt blocks monthly. Block sizes could vary. Focusing on 6" or 12" blocks seems suitable for the class focus.
No books or patterns are required for the class. Simply choose your fabric scraps or perhaps 1/2 yd cuts for blocks. Add 2 yards for a border and sashing.
Starting January 14th and 21st, 10-1:00 p.m. Eastern time.
I have wanted to teach an Underground Railroad class for a long time. Since the Underground Railroad during slave times has been talked about for generations, it has fascinated me. Many say it is more myth than fact, and yet repeatedly the tales are told, celebrating black heroes and white heroes from days long gone.
It has been fascinating. I've delved into the myths, looked at old photographs, read historical perspectives and tried to immerse myself into life back then. What was it like? How did folks help each other? Was quilting a 'thing' that saved lives? I've been reading and researching. Now I am ready to combine a bit of history with poetic license in order for us to create our own story of the Underground Railroad.
We will look at 12-16 quilt blocks. Instead of hand quilting, we will bring these blocks into today, make them Accuquilt friendly, and design our own Underground Railroad quilt. What story might we tellL? At the least, we will enjoy sewing and piecing together; at the most, we will walk away with an appreciation for history, what it tells us, and what we might choose to read between the lines.
ALL ZOOM classes are recorded and downloadable for 5 DAYS (120 hours) after the live class. The recording is e-mailed to registered students after class. Links to the pdf of the class PowerPoint is shared as a permanent reference for class content.
A listing of class supplies will be shared by the instructor prior to the start of class. The class link is generally mailed 2-3 hours prior to class so the link doesn't get lost in personal emails.
